Corporate Policy: Paid Time Off (PTO) & Work Flexibility
Entity: Black & Veatch
Effective Date: January 1, 2026
Applicability: All Full-Time Professionals (U.S. Based)
1. Policy Purpose
Black & Veatch is committed to fostering a culture of ownership and "Work-Life Harmony." This policy provides a structured framework for professionals to recharge, manage personal obligations, and maintain health, ensuring long-term productivity and engagement within our employee-owned firm.
2. Paid Time Off (PTO) Accrual
PTO is earned based on a combination of professional job level and years of continuous service with the company.
2.1 Accrual Tiers
| Years of Service | Annual Accrual (Approx.) | Pay Period Accrual Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 5 Years | 120 Hours (15 Days) | 4.62 Hours |
| 5 – 15 Years | 160 Hours (20 Days) | 6.15 Hours |
| 15+ Years | 200+ Hours (25+ Days) | 7.69 Hours |
Note: Specific accrual may vary by business unit or executive contract.
2.2 Carry-Over and Caps
To encourage regular rest, a maximum of 80 hours (unless state law dictates otherwise) may be carried over into the following calendar year. Hours exceeding this cap at year-end may be forfeited or, in specific jurisdictions, moved into a long-term sick bank.
3. Sick Leave and Disability
In addition to standard PTO, Black & Veatch provides specialized banks for health-related absences:
Short-Term Sick Leave: Used for personal illness, medical appointments, or care for an immediate family member.
Salary Continuance: For extended illnesses or injuries, the company provides short-term disability coverage (Salary Continuance) after a standard elimination period, typically covering a percentage of base pay.
4. The 9/80 Flexible Work Schedule
To provide enhanced flexibility, B&V offers the 9/80 Schedule, a compressed workweek option that does not reduce PTO balances.
The Cycle: Professionals work 80 hours over 9 business days instead of 10.
The Hours: Monday through Thursday (9 hours/day); one "Work Friday" (8 hours); one "Off Friday" (0 hours).
Holiday Adjustment: If a public holiday falls on a scheduled 9-hour day, the professional receives 8 hours of holiday pay and must apply 1 hour of PTO or adjust their weekly schedule to reach 40 hours.
5. Paid Holidays
Black & Veatch observes a minimum of eight (8) paid holidays per year, including but not limited to:
New Year’s Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day (and the following Friday)
Christmas Day
6. Administration and Approval
Notice: Professionals are expected to provide at least two weeks' notice for planned vacation of three days or more.
Approval: PTO is subject to manager approval based on project deadlines and client deliverables.
Termination: Upon separation from the company, earned but unused PTO will be paid out in accordance with applicable state laws and company bylaws.
